This course, Microbiology for Sterile Processing Technicians, is the third course in the Learning Pathway of Sterile Processing Technician Certificate Program. Unit 1 — Introduction to Microbiology

  • Types and characteristics of microorganisms

  • Bacteria, viruses, fungi, and prions

Unit 2 — Chain of Infection

  • Modes of transmission

  • Conditions for microbial growth

Unit 3 — Cross-Contamination Control

  • Prevention measures in SPD operations

  • Cleaning and handling techniques to prevent spread

Unit 4 — Infection Prevention Standards

  • CDC guidelines and best practices for healthcare infection control

Clock Hours: 15 theory hours (Total: 15 hours)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Course 2 — Anatomy & Physiology for Sterile Processing Technicians.
Outcome: Students will understand how microorganisms spread and how sterile processing practices prevent healthcare-associated infections.
