Milay Institute Launches Bay Area’s Only Technician Training Programs
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hayward, CA – August 1, 2025 In response to rising demands for skilled technical workers across laboratory, biotech and cleanroom environments, the Milay Institute of Science & Technology is proud to announce the launch of three new certificate programs that is the first of their kinds in the Bay Area.
The new offerings include:
-
Field Service Technician Certificate – Calibration Specialty
-
Field Service Technician Certificate – Water Purification System Specialty
-
Field Service Technician Certificate – Microscope Specialty
These short-term programs are designed to prepare students for technician-level careers supporting precision instrumentation, laboratory equipment, and water purification systems widely used in the region’s healthcare, research, and pharmaceutical industries.
A Critical Training Gap—Now Filled
Despite the Bay Area’s reputation as a global hub for science and innovation, no community colleges, adult education programs, or vocational schools currently offer dedicated technician training in these fields.
“Employers across the Bay Area need skilled technicians to service their lab equipment, calibrate instruments, and maintain high-purity water systems—but no one was training people for those jobs,” said Germaine Wilkoem-Milay, Chief Academic Officer of Milay Institute. “We’re proud to be the first school in the region offering hands-on, certification-based training in these specialties.”
Each certificate can be completed in just 3 to 6 weeks, and all include online instruction, in-person labs, and optional externships with employer partners.
Regional Job Demand: Backed by Real Data
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the Installation, Maintenance, and Repair (IMR) occupational group is projected to add over 600,000 job openings per year nationwide between 2023 and 2033, with a 5% overall growth rate (bls.gov). Based on Bay Area population estimates, this translates to roughly:
1,300 to 1,500 technician job openings per year in fields directly related to Milay Institute’s training specialties
These jobs span:
-
Biotech & pharma labs (Genentech, BioMarin, Gilead)
-
University research facilities (UCSF, Stanford, UC Berkeley)
-
Medical equipment service companies
-
Cleanrooms & controlled manufacturing environments
Career Advantages: High Demand, Low Competition
✅ No Degree or Experience Required
Most employers in these fields only require a high school diploma and hands-on technical training—not a 2- or 4-year degree.
✅ Higher Wages, Less Competition
Starting wages for field service technician roles in the Bay Area typically range from $28–$32 per hour ($58K–$66K/year), with experienced techs earning $70K–$90K+. Unlike oversaturated fields, these roles have limited competition and high upward mobility.
✅ Pathways to Certification & Advancement
Graduates can pursue manufacturer certifications (e.g., ISO 17025 calibration procedures, water quality standards, optical systems) and advance into engineering support, quality control, or management roles.
Built for Bay Area Industry
Milay Institute’s curriculum was designed in collaboration with local employers to ensure job relevance from day one. Students learn to:
-
Calibrate lab equipment to industry standards
-
Assemble, test, and maintain RO/DI/UV water purification systems
-
Disassemble, clean, and realign advanced microscopes
-
Maintain service logs, troubleshoot errors, and pass compliance audits
“We’re not just teaching concepts—we’re training people to walk into a lab, open a panel, and fix real problems,” said Ronald Reed, Workforce Development Director.
Enrollment Now Open
All three programs are currently accepting students for the upcoming term. Classes are held at Milay Institute’s Hayward campus with blended online instruction and flexible scheduling options. Payment plans and financial support are available.
