Cleaning and Decontamination in SPD

This course, Cleaning & Decontamination Procedures, is the fourth course in the Learning Pathway of the Sterile Processing Technician Certificate Program. It teaches essential processes for cleaning and decontaminating surgical instruments and devices in compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Unit 1 — Decontamination Area Protocols

  • Workflow in decontamination areas

  • Separation of soiled and clean work zones

Unit 2 — Point-of-Use and Initial Treatment

  • Pre-cleaning at the point of use

  • Transportation of contaminated items

Unit 3 — Cleaning Methods

  • Manual cleaning techniques

  • Mechanical cleaning: washer-disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners

Unit 4 — Safety and Compliance

  • PPE usage

  • SDS review and chemical safety

  • Spill and exposure response procedures

Unit 5 — Equipment QC & Troubleshooting

  • Preventive maintenance

  • Common cleaning failures and corrective actions

Clock Hours: 15 theory hours, 5 lab hours (Total: 20 hours)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Course 3 — Microbiology for Sterile Processing Technicians.
Outcome: Students will competently clean and decontaminate instruments and devices while adhering to safety and infection prevention protocols.
